Ken Fong’s big gay indie rock romance adventure
Some day maybe this comic won’t be funny, because no one will know who Janelle Monáe is any more. And maybe some of you don’t know, right now. Let me fix that.
Janelle Monáe is a musician who has put out one of the best albums of 2010. I saw her perform live a couple of months ago… I really thought I might never get to see her in a small venue again. (It was a fantastic show.) We’ll see if she really does rocket out of the indie rock world, as I expect she will. In the mean time, she’s got a few videos you can watch:
I supposed this joke could have worked just about as well if I’d said The Arcade Fire or Interpol or Stephin Merritt or something like that.

:DD!
I love Janelle Monaé! A friend and I are going to see her in December! She’s amazing! I recently introduced my girlfriend to her as well 🙂
I love Janelle Monáe! But Stephin Merritt is the ultimate in gay indie nerd slap-fight material. The “i” in his first name alone!
I know who Janelle Monae–and I happened to love Suites I-III! I don’t know why she’s more popular; her music is amazing! I wish I could see her live…great to see her mentioned in this comic! 😀
Too often has indie rock come between people. It’s a shame.
For me, the joke works better due to my NOT having heard of her. The kids, they’re arguing about somebody who’s obscure, yo! (That’s my “hipster” voice. It’s groovy!)

No… I’ve… I’ve… read all of them?
????????
This is unfair… I need moooreee!
@Kat
I know how you feel; I feel the same way every week! 😉
I hadn’t heard of her, but I like the videos you put up.
The trouble I have with the whole Indie Rock thing is simply that I don’t understand why it matters whether what you listen to is obscure or not as long as it’s good. I definitely understand supporting indie musicians, companies, bookstores, etcetera, but there’s no reason to get on a high horse about how it’s so cool that you know all these people who aren’t main stream. And…often times a lot of indie music sounds the same the way most pop music sounds the same, which is basically killing the whole point.
I love that she is now a cover girl or is it Revlon?
