Welcome new readers! (And old readers.) I hope you think this comic is pretty OK. I’m about to embark on a new storyline; we’ll see where that goes.

I don’t think you need to know the music referred to here to enjoy the joke, but I’m providing a few videos for your edification.

The La’s self-titled debut was their one and only album*, and it’s just about perfect. I love 90% of this album, to the point that it’s hard for me to select one song to play. But here’s one of my favorites:

(*Yes, there were a couple of albums released after they broke up, made up of unfinished recording dredged up from god knows where; these do not count.)

Joanna Newsom is an artist not everyone likes. She’s got an odd voice, but musically her work is outstanding. She plays harp, but it’s not the typical glissando-laden harp deal; she works it more like a guitar. The songs themselves are long and dense and meandering. So give it a listen. You might love it.

Finally, Deerhoof. For the record, I wouldn’t call them “overrated”. They aren’t a band I know all that well, though, so instead of trying to describe them, I will just point you toward this video, which I can’t embed.
