In case you were wondering what was going on with our young friends….

Some of you may know that in addition to drawing this comic, I work with an organization that’s building a new radio station in Chicago. We have a campaign at Kickstarter that’s ending on Wednesday. As I write this you have less than 48 hours to get in on it, and there are still a lot of great gifts available. Check it out.

Finally, on a very serious note:

This odd little man stopped me on the street today as I was on my way to the post office. He used a walker; one hand was mangled, and one foot was turned in and supported in a brace. He spoke to me very quickly and very quietly and told me: always wear your helmet when you ride your bicycle. He told me about the bike accident that had mangled his hand and foot and put him in a four-month coma. It had also, clearly (as he repeated himself again and again and didn’t make a whole lot of sense), taken away a good chunk of his intellectual power too. I thought about how my sister works in a hospital with patients who have severe brain injuries; she sees guys like this every day. I also thought about the young local barista, a friend of several friends of mine, who was killed a couple of weeks ago while out on her bicycle. The odd man told me (several times), tell your family, and tell you friends: always wear your helmet. It was a really strange encounter, frankly, but I felt a need to pass on the message, so I’m passing it on to all of you.

I don’t mean to be a downer… but there it is. Take care of yourselves.
