Did you know that it’s bike to work week here in the US? This week everyone in encouraged to try biking to work. It’s healthy for you and for the environment! More or less. (Maybe it’s not so healthy to bike through smog, for example, or on the highway.)
Last week I was biking to work and a squirrel darted out in front of me, as they do. I didn’t hit it, but the comic was born from that incident — and from the time many years ago when I did run over a squirrel in my car. (Same story: he darted out, and before I could react, he was under me.) That was sort of horrible. Well. I won’t go into it.
Hey, do you bike to work? Regularly? This week only?
Finn: Hey Candy. What's up? You look kind of shellshocked.
Candy: I ran over a squirrel on the way to work.
Finn: Oh, man. I'm sorry. That's hard, I know.
Candy: I was on my BIKE.
Charlie: Oh! Eek.

That happened to me once when I was on my bike, only it was a rat! D:.
It freaked me out so I swerved out of the way. Only narrowly missed it.
Ok: eek! That’s kind of horrifying.
Our neighborhood has a bit of a rat problem. Every year around this time they nest in the yard again. I’m watching… so far nothing.
This strip reminded me of my 7th grade teacher who had a special license to collect roadkill. He brought it into class for dissections, thus wiping out all morning lessons for the duration. We would then go eat lunch. The class he saw in the afternoon always complained that the lingering smell made them sick, but it never bothered me. I loved that school, that teacher, and that time of my life. Great fun, better memories.
I always walk, but I live really close and don’t have a car. I hit a dear once, though…poor Candy.
Heya!!…
Just got my copy of your book and it’s AWESOME!! Charlie is the CUTEST guy ever.
Also, this reminds me of the time I was attacked by a mouse walking down Cresent Heights Blvd. Most amusing.
I’m so glad you like the book! And… *attacked* by a mouse? Sounds like a story! Do tell!
It is, but it’s a rather long story.
