Parade
Hi! So today’s comic is jam-packed with cameos. I was drawing a street scene, and I needed people, and then I got this crazy idea that I could fill in the audience with GLBT characters from other strips, and WHAT FUN that would be. And it was fun, but also hard, and I left off a good many characters I’d like to have included.
So let’s play a game.
Can you identify them? There are 8 strips represented, total (not including this one, naturally). 5 are linked from my right column links (web comics, peeps in print).
At least one is terribly drawn. (sorry)
Wheee!
[UPDATE] The big reveal. You collectively got most of them. Here’s the breakdown, left to right: [UPDATE UPDATE: There was a code typo below that dropped one of the comics: Shortpacked. Sorry!
- Andy and Adam of Adam and Andy
- Dr. Bash of Templar, AZ
- Finn and Charlie
- Leslie of Shortpacked
- Sydney, Mo, and Lois of Dykes to Watch Out For
- Jaime and Jim
- Larry and Leonard of Leonard and Larry
- Dorothy and Jane of Jane’s World (which you can read here)
- Abel of Abel Boddy
- Ken and Corey
- Dill and Rorik of Viking Zombie Boyfriend
Now go read the strips I’ve referenced. They’re all good.

i recognize two people, but from where i don’t know…
whats stonewall?
Adam & Andy
Leonard & Larry (?)
…boo, I don’t see Harley and Mik. 😛
I recognize Mo and Sydney from Dykes To Watch Out For, I think. I’m too illiterate to get any others.
I only recognized Leslie from Shortpacked!
Completely enthralled with your webcomic, Tony! I can relate to it so well with my married life, it’s eerie. Charlie is definitely a mirror image of my husband, I can’t get enough of him 😉
(I admit, I’m the more grumpy Finn..arrrgh no shame, no shame)
Cheers! Please don’t stop the comics! This one is especially sweet in its own way, I adore it.
I see Mo and Sydney and… I forget her name, the blond transman… from Dykes to Watch Out For. And I see Abel Boddy.
@Amando: The Stonewall Inn was (is) a gay bar in Greenwich Village, NY. The night of Judy Garland’s funeral, the police raided the bar, sparking a series of violent riots. The Stonewall Riots are widely held to mark the beginning of the modern gay rights movement; Gay Pride in many cities (New York and San Francisco in particular) is held the last Sunday in June in commemoration.
Amando, your homework this weekend is to watch the movie Stonewall, which is a cute and entertaining (and also fairly moving) fictionalization of the events of June 28, 1969, and a nice portrait of the times.
Or you could watch an actual documentary, which would probably be more effecting, if less entertaining. I heard one on the radio last week, but I don’t know what it was called. (Anyone have a recommendation?)
One nice detail of the Stonewall riots: more police were injured than civilians. At the time, the idea that a bunch of queers (many of them drag queens) could overpower the police was shocking and revolutionary.
In the meantime, I give you Varla Jean Merman:
(And thanks to Jeremymlad for introducing me to this video last year.)
And oh yeah: Thanks Daem!
And everyone: you’ve got 5 out of 8…
You did a good job I recognized right off the bat , Rorik and dill in the right corner and adam and andy in the left. I do not read many other comics. Im not into some of the more racey comics. I like the innocence in this comic and adam and andy because its very much like my life with my partner.
I definitely recognize someone… thanks! Happy Pride!
Abel was fun to draw because the style was so different — it was a challenge to render him in the style of this cartoon and yet make him recognizable.
Love your strip- just discovered and read eveything. Laughed very hard at above 1st comment/question:”Whats Stonewall?” Oh my gosh. There’s another great gay strip out there about a guy coming out- he has his own “guardian dragqueen” who explains the true meaning of pride- and offers a nice retelling of the Stonewall story. Oh, and I drew a cool avatar but it was too confusing to use that linked Gravatar site. anyhow,Tony, Keep up the great strip!!!!!
I love this strip.
I think I’ll put “Stonewall” on my netflix, too.
Re: “what’s Stonewall” – remember that not everyone on the internet is from the US! Still, it is important even in a global context, and worth sharing as a fascinating piece of history, regardless.
And thanks for the Varla Jean video, Tony.
Indeed. I think Amando, the first commenter, is from Australia. Something that happened on the opposite end of the globe 40 years ago… well you might not know about it. Especially since it’s not the sort of history we learn about in school or from our families.
ok. Consider me soundly spanked for being slightly nationalistic. my bad. just thought Amando was an American whipper-snapper. im a little gay-politally defensive from my time living in San Francisco. Apologies all around.
I took one glance and thought, “Hey! what’re Mo and Sydney doing here?” before catching onto the theme …can’t believe I overlooked Lois.
This strip is darling and fun, and the only one I got off the bat was Abel Boddy. But now I’m familiar with Viking Zombie Boyfriend and it’s my new favorite thing! (after Finn and Charlie, obvs.) Thanks, for expanding my horizons! (and thanks for the shout-out for the Varla Jean clip *blush*)
I don’t know what it was about Pride this year but I felt kind of like those two guys, rathering to stay at home. I went anyway and got rained on, and was part of it, but it seemed to me that a lot of folks felt the same way. Interesting to me that you picked up on it too. What WAS it about this year?
At any rate, my desire for next year is to make it exciting, and enter a float where we shall dance and lip-sync Varla Jean’s song. Pipe dream, but I have until next May to try and put it together!
